one arm parisian twice born mix (old skool asian underground soundz) // dj soundar [free download]
Last night on the Bobby Friction show (BBC Asian Network), my brother from France – DJ Soundar dropped an old skool asian underground mix filled with some of my favourite tunes by Dhamaal Soundsystem, Visionary Underground and many more.
About DJ Soundar : One of an innovative new wave of DJs, Soundar was the first Asian DJ / producer and Asian underground music promoter on the urban French electronic music scene. With versatility & skill, he mixes the rich, intricate & complex sounds of his cultural heritage with western urban & electronic beats, producing music with passion & integrity. His mixes transport you to a place where time-honoured Indian traditions meet contemporary western technology, reflecting his true cultural and artistic identity with the sensuality and authenticity of his work.
Big respect to DJ Soundar for keeping the scene alive in Paris and the rest of France!!

RichMIx-Shri/Bandish/BobbyFriction
Hey people here are some awesome pics taken last week at RichMix, where Shri, Bandish Projekt, Last Mango in Paris, Sanchita Farruque, Lord Kimo and Bobby Friction graced us with their presence.
I bombed it down the motorway from Birmingham to London and caught the last 50 mins of it. I was disappointed with the turn out.
I get emails and facebook messages from so many people. Sanj, let me know when the next gig is. Sanj the music is awesome where can I see it live? Well there are people out there holding these gigs and people just don’t turn up.
What’s with that? There is a lot of hard work and effort that goes into staging even a small gig. This is a chance for fans to support the artist so they continue to make new music that will push boundaries.
I cannot stress the importance of fan support. Its crucial.
Please do make the effort to attend!
Thanks.
Sanj

Nu:klea – “The Silent MC”
Known as the Silent MC, Nu:klea is the latest artist in my inbox. On Monday 2nd Aug ’10, Nu:klea was featured as one of the artists of Bobby Frictions show where his debut track ‘Kolkata Mong’ was aired.
Nu:klea – a DJ, MC, band backing singer, broadcaster, promoter and manager across a number of genres.
“I lost my voice, and found my sound” ‐ Nu:klea
Nu:klea was working on a solo rap/singing album in early 2010. During the preparation period, he was struck down with a virus rendering him unable to speak for a month and medically forbidden to speak loudly, let alone sing or rap. Now on the mend but after losing his voice, due to this prolonged condition, Nu:klea set about making dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass to unleash his inner sound and creativity.
He has been ordered to limit talking and not sing or rap at all. As usual, lyricists and artists have a lot to say and Nu:klea is the same but he lets his music do the talking. He lost his voice, and found his sound.
Check out his debut track: ‘Kolkata Mong’
A dubstep banger of a track set to get you groovin … The mix features snippets of vocals by Yvonne, with an original Indian‐style riff, driving beat, rocking guitars and wobbling bass.
The track was inspired by an event in an epic 1000 mile journey in a 2 stroke auto rickshaw (tuk tuk). The rally, for charity, took place along the east coast of India. With a top speed of 35 miles per hour, Nu:klea and his friends drove for 1 week. 80 km short of Kolkata, they ran into a monster traffic jam on the national highway and had to bed down for the night in a roadside motel. They hadn’t planned for this.
They were so close yet so far. Relaxing because they had nearly reached the destination, but anxious as they hadn’t quite. A chilled out tension in the air. That was the night of “Kolkata Mong.”
Karsh Kale Midival Punditz Live @ RichMix
I got to the RichMix a couple of hours early as I was meeting a good friend (TJ Chana, Asian Underground London FB) to chill out and chat with. To my surprise and sheer good fortune Karsh Kale, Midival Punditz, Vishal Vaid and Pt. Ajay Prasanna where busy sound testing. Can you imagine the excitement within? Being a fan of these gents as long as I’ve been a fan of Talvin’s I got the opportunity to watch them fine tune their performance – a true blessing.
After having dinner with them and the legendary Osmani Soundz and Shandy from The Nasha Experience we made our way back to the venue to an absolutely pumpin’ vibe. Bobby Friction was on the decks busting some of the finest dubstep getting the crowd warmed up for one amazing night.
Like majority of the people I had been waiting for this for ages! The last time they were in London together was 1999 when Karsh and Punditz first met! The place went MENTAL when Karsh, Punditz, Vishal and Pt Ajay walked on stage.
Below pics & vids by TJ Chana:
Jumping straight into the first track PD7 from the album Breathing Under Water a great way to start. Intense table beats and drum n bass combined with beautiful melodies being played by Pt Ajay on the Bansuri was a treat!
PD7 – Live @ Richmix
Next up was Letting Go from the album Liberation. This time, Karsh switching from Tabla to the drum kit and a fantastic entry number for Vishal Vaid, whose voice captivated the crowd. I was watching some of the reactions of some of people around me and their eyes popped.
Letting Go – Live @ Richmix
Letting Go was followed by the very dreamlike and feel good track – Sunbeam that features on a fantastic compilation album called REVOLUTION RISING: ethnotechno.com vol.1 presented by dimmSummer.
This track carries you off to a totally different place if you allowed it to soak into and through you. Utilising Vishal’s vocals to the best of its ability.
SuperNova
Then a track we had all been waiting for, named after his daughter and on the original featured tabla maestro himself Zakir Hussain! A beautiful improvisation and an expansion of the original just enhanced it tenfold! I don’t have need to say anything more … just watch the below clip …
Milan: Karsh Kale/Midival Punditz Ft Pt Ajay Prasana
After Milan, my favourite track off the album Hello Hello and originally sung by Angaraag Papon Mahanta was on. Naina Laagey, a seriously beautiful track. I cannot fault it in any way, was simply enchanting and breath-taking.
Heres the original: Live at Paleo Fest 09 not RichMix.
After another an amazing 4 tracks, Atomizer, Electric Universe, Drifting, Bhangra Fever
They ended the gig with Challa.
“the government is picking up the pieces after KK, MPz VV and Pt.AP smashed London” … TJ Chana
Im a huge fan of these guys, got all their albums etc. However there’s nothing like watching your favourite artists performing on stage just a few feet away from you and really bringing alive what you’ve been listening to through speakers and earphones for so many years. It’s how the tracks were intended to be heard LIVE! As I mentioned before there were some
fantastic renditions of original tracks and that a good thing! You don’t want to be hearing the same version as the CD, you want that extra spin, something unique that puts their talents on display which they delivered gracefully.
All the guys are incredibly down to earth, and that’s probably one of the best things about the music I listen to, getting to interact with the artists and finding out they’re just like you and me. The great thing about the gig was the reaction of fans. Watching their faces light up track after track, seeing a constant smile of appreciation made it all worth it in the end!
By far one of the best gigs I’ve been too!
I know for a fact the gig was only a fraction of what they are capable of, I just hope they keep coming back to the UK and allowing us to experience their life’s work.
Thank you: Karsh, Gaurav, Tapan, Vishal, Pt. Ajay, Osmani Soundz, Shandy, TJ Chana!! and Thank you to all those that follow the NADA:BRAHMAN and support the Asian Underground FB page, fantastic meeting you guys hope to see you all again.
gig alert: here at last …
After months and for some of us years of anticipation … they are finally here … the gig we have ALL been waiting for … Karsh Kale and the dynamic duo of Asian electronica Tapan Raj and Gaurav Raina better known as the MIDIval PunditZ will grace us with their presence together with Bobby Friction on Saturday 29th May 2010.
It’s been described as “global groove music”, but Karsh Kale & MIDIval Punditz’s sound is much more than that. Together, they weave influences from drum ‘n’ bass, Sufi music, deep house, centuries-old ghazals, rock, trip-hop, North and South Indian classical and folk music, trance, Jamaican dancehall and more. It’s a tight acoustic-electronic soundscape that – devoid of fusion clichés – blends evocative singing, instrumental melodies, ambient drone and funky, intricate amplified beats with ballsy intelligence and infectious energy.
