10 Years of Global Travel Brings Retro Electronica

You may know Tarun ‘Tspoon’ Nayar from his much in demand band Delhi 2 Dublin, but what you may not know is that Tarun is also a Vancouver based DJ/producer who is about to turn Asian-fused electronica on its ear. After travelling the four corners of the globe, Tarun has compiled 10 years of material for his latest solo effort, 22º of Beatitude (Chaiwalla’s Boombox; March 01, 2011) which he describes as his most personal work to date.

Turkish Spice by Tarun Nayar

Recording sessions with artists worldwide, 22º of Beatitude brings us to temples in Bhutan, to street corners in Tokyo and even to an intimate conversation between the artist and his grandmother. Breaking out of the dancefloor-driven format, Tarun’s aim was to record as many of the sounds as possible, live, without the use of sample libraries. Each of these songs tells a story, and each story is a chapter in the artist’s life. They are a decade-long evolution of sounds that blend culture, beats and bass. With influences ranging from Talvin Singh to Bassnectar, Tarun’s music aims to break boundaries and bring people together.

Futurestates // Beholder by Nisha Ganatra

Over in America, there’s a compelling science fiction series, FUTURESTATES, which is back with another collection of highly innovative independent mini-features. These features delve into our possible future through the kaleidoscope of our modern world.

Beholder is the latest film from Nisha Ganatra, director of Chutney Popcorn whose original score was composed and produced by Karsh Kale. This is a new venture for the director; she has taken a step from doing comedy orientated films, such as Chutney Popcorn and Cake featuring Heather Graham to now Science Fiction.

You’ll find Beholder is a thought provoking film, based on the subject of reproductive technology. Beholder takes you on an internal journey of Sasha, an expecting mother and wife of a rising political star Bobby Aryana. After a routine check up, Sasha discovers that the foetus is a carrier of the “Gay Gene”, the immediate course of action is to be inoculated to prevent any evolution of homosexuality in later life. Sasha’s predicament, does she take the inoculation, keeping her personal life and her husband’s public life intact or does she chose to let it be, sacrificing so much more.

Two US based composers who join forces to create an atmosphere that will take you on a journey with Sasha. First is Andrew Lockington, who has worked on many feature films that we all have heard of – Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Tom Hanks produced “City of Ember.” Second is Michael White, a Canadian trumpet player, arranger, and composer for film and television, who has most notably written the Oscar winning animated film Ryan by Chris Landreth but also working on big named films such as; X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Déjà vu.

This tag team effort by Andrew and Michael allows you to feel what Sasha feels. The score really takes helps you to connect with the character, evoking emotions that will whisk you on highs and lows with her as on some level; we have all been through a struggle of either wanting to fit in or to stand out.

Beholder will be screening at the Indian Film Festival of Los Festival at the prestigious Arclight Hollywood. The film will also be screened during the Tribeca Film Festival in a special screening hosted by Tribeca All Access. The screening is on Saturday April 23rd at 2:30PM @ the Clearview Cinemas in Chelsea.

japan tribute // rekesh chauhan

Hey folks,

Well it has been one month and one day since the Earthquake and Tsunami hit Japan causing devastation. I remember tweeting that very day saying:

“Regardless of how much control, power and ego we have. Every now and then, the universe reminds us how truly powerless we really are.”

The universe provided a reminder of who is really in control of the world. Out of something negative … positives are bound to come out. A friend of mine, Rekesh Chauhan who believes that “music has the power to cause change” got together with  musicians from all around the UK and composed a special musical piece – here is the music video …

TEDxMumbai | Dhanashree Pandit-Rai on Indian Classical Music

An amazing lecture by Dhanashree Pandit-Rai, who shows that if the 7 notes of music are common all over the world, then why do somethings sound Indian, or Japanese, or Western? She goes on to show some of the elements of Indian classical music like Khatka, Murki, Zamzama, Andolan, Aalap, Taan.

Daft Punk // The Glitch Mob :: Derezzed Remix

After the success of TRON: LEGACY, the French house legends DAFT PUNK are back. This time, they’ve scoured the planet for the biggest names in electronica to bring you the remix album, Tron Legacy: R3CONFIGUR3D.

The album has been finely tuned by some of the best in the genre, from Moby to Paul Oakenfold and Crystal Method to Photek. The one I want to bring to your attention is by LA trio, The Glitch Mob who have remixed the opening track “DEREZZED” into a mind-bending electro luminary number. Crammed with essential heavy bass and intense rhythms this lengthened interpretation just blew my ears away!

You can buy the album on iTunes

Pathaan’s WORLDPEACE Mix (FREE DOWNLOAD)

A fabulous mix by none other than Pathaan. This mix is a never release before groovy, exotic, downtempo mix filled with eclectic electronica and global beats.

Pathaan says :

I’m not a politician but am human and sickened by the current world affairs……….
During a time of religious conflict, war, oppression, famine and racism etc etc, can music change & influence man ? I BELIEVE IT CAN !!!

So here begins a story I feel I must share and a mix for you to download !!!

Just under a decade ago, as a mark of respect and to acknowledge in my own way the 1st anniversary of 911, this was a ‘Stoned Asia Music’ priority release in Sept’ 2002 that was never released in THIS form. The reason being, a few of the distributors felt nervous about the tracklisting especially the 1st track and the point I was trying to make through the music !!

So I went back to the drawing board and changed the whole release to get the nervous distributors off my back. That version did very well for the label and can be read about here : www.pathaan.com

transglobal underground/krupa @ eastern electronic festival

A couple of weeks ago at SHAANTI’s Eastern Electronic Festival, sandwiched between two great acts, SWAMI and The Nasha Experience was Transglobal Underground (TGU). God knows why had I not seen them live before? They were incredible!

For the past two decades TGU have been making people tap their toes and bop their heads to their invigorating pulsating beats merged multicultural influences from across the world. On the night, the set was led by Tim Whelan with Hamid Mantu on Drum Gurjit Sihra on Dhol and lead vocals provided by Krupa.

Old and new material was performed including the rhythmically infectious “Drums of Navarone” featuring some extraordinary interplay between drummer and dhol player resulting in some magnificent and thunderous sounds!

Drums of Navarone

The track that really got my attention was “Emotional YoYo” (from the album “Moonshout”) sang by Krupa. It was an impressive display of formidable stage presence combined vocal energy that really brought the track alive. I watched people faces as she performed; we were left speechless in admiration. The last time I saw this sort of reaction, I was at London’s Southbank Centre watching Shaa’ir n Func.

Krupa’s dynamic vocal prowess is all about injecting character into the words, colouring them with a healthy dose of playfulness and vigour. As a friend put it she’s “Gwen Stefani on crack. Her style is super quirky and she has more energy than an energiser bunny.”

Emotional YoYo

Krupa also performed “Ridiculous Boy” her soon to be released single from her forthcoming debut album “Wonder IF the Moon”.

Together – Talvin Singh+Niladri Kumar join forces

Two truly innovative musicians come together to form a breathtaking combination. Their latest collaboration aptly titled “Together”, brings their formidable talents and skills to unravelling fresh soundscapes set in a classical music backdrop.

I cannot express my joy when I heard about this album – reasons are many, as I’m sure a lot of you will understand.

When I first saw them perform together in Manchester back in 2009, I was left in awe of the sounds that hit my ear drums. Read about the concert here:

Talvin Singh & Niladri Kumar, Manchester – 25.Sept.09

MUSICAL RICKSHAW with PATHAAN [Exclusive]

Got a nada:brahma EXCLUSIVE for you guys!

Following the success of Globetronica vols 1 and 2, Pathaan is back with a new compilation album titled and inspired by his BBC radio show, Musical Rickshaw.

The album is a true reflection of the show but sounds nothing like any of his previous comps. Over 2 CD’s, Pathaan takes the listener on a music pilgrimage of earth shaking bass, boom-bastic eclectic world beats & ecstatic dance rhythms.

CD1 has a warm welcoming bass shaking vibe that’s profoundly deep. From the first notes, the music touches you and makes you want to listen to the whole album in one go, like a good book that you simply cannot put aside. Ranging from known to unknown artists CD1 features upfront killa cuts from the likes of Warrior One, Riz MC, Detboi, Baaba Maal, Cornershop, OMFO, Dubterror, Midland, True Tiger and more.

On CD2 whilst we have more of the same, it’s very different to CD1 in sound and style. Featuring Mighty Mouse, Culprit 1, Shir Khan, Om Unit, Ancient Astronauts, Adam Freeland, Klute, Bandish Projekt; the list goes on.

Musical Rickshaw with Pathaan is a hub of exciting, multi-genre grooves that represents the fabulous spirit of transnational musical collaboration.

Definitely worth a buy! Just a few of the gems featured on the album:

Riz MC – Get On It (True Tiger Remix):

Sunrise in Injumbakam (Pathaan’s Tribute Remix) sample:

Caravan Crookz – Bhangra Video (FREE DOWNLOAD)

Caravan Crookz – these guys are definitely paving the way to future of British Asian music … creating tracks and videos that are not limited to the “desi scene”. You know what I’m on about … Those tacky videos with BMWs and Mercs, where the MC and his mates are looking “gangsta”, wannabe models dancing around in miniskirts (imagine if it was your cousin!) and all shot in some abandoned warehouse in Dudley …

So, after hitting us with highly contagious “Scooter Singh” heres their latest release a “Bhangra Video”.
